Native gold collection

The native gold collection of the Yevhen Lazarenko Mineralogical Museum comprises 55 specimens from deposits and ore occurrences of Europe, Africa, and North America. The oldest native gold specimens are exhibits acquired during the period from the establishment of the museum until 1880; unfortunately, the exact year of their purchase or donation is unknown. In the early 1890s, the Museum purchased specimens of rocks containing native gold from deposits in the United States. Specimens with native gold from Zimbabwe (until 1980 Southern Rhodesia, a colony of Great Britain) were acquired in the first half of the 20th century (between 1909 and 1939) from the dealer company of Wilhelm Maucher. In 1960, an exchange of mineralogical collections was carried out between the Lviv Mineralogical Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, Canada). Among other interesting specimens, the Museum also received rocks with native gold from several localities in Canada. In the 1970s–1980s, the collection was enriched by donations from graduates of the Faculty of Geology, including specimens from Buryatia, Magadan Oblast, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. During the period of independent Ukraine, the Museum received native gold specimens from the Klondike region of Canada, as well as from Mali and Ukraine.
